Biological Substrate Management

The human condition is quite a frail one. We possess the capacity of very small deviations in environmental conditions. Any variations in the temperature, balance of chemicals in the air, or exposure to radiation from any source, leaves us in peril for survival. On Earth we have what amounts to a symphony of balance between all these various factors.

Once we are off Earth, we will be left with not only creating this balance but far more importantly, maintaining this balance consistently for our very survival. The maintenance is hard enough but we will also have to deal with unexpected challenges to this delicate balance. It is the equivalent of managing a very delicate life form such as a coral outside of its natural environment of a coral reef. Endless variables can come into play to challenge the viability of survival. Mitigating such risks and replicating this balance off-earth will be one of our greatest challenges. Will we be able to accomplish this goal and relegate biological management to an afterthought? The answer lies in the space startups of the future.
